Air Travel Tips
- Check In for your Flight Online
Instead of wasting your time in long queues in front of a check-in counter at the airport, you can check in at home and even print out your boarding pass. If you travel with hand luggage only, you can proceed directly to the security check and if you travel with luggage, you will find special "drop off" counters for passengers already holding such a boarding pass. The queues here are normally much shorter than all the other queues.
However, who can remember all the different websites of the airlines? One website offers a fast connection to the specific check-in page of most airlines. The service is free and you only have to remember one site for all airlines.
- Several Air Travel Tips
On flights of 4 hours or more:
- Wear comfortable/casual pants/shoes - sometimes it gets cold and there may not be extra blankets.
- Stow all small valuables not in the floor or overhead bins, but in the seat back pocket in front of you.
- Of course, bring reading material and [crossword] puzzles.
- Always be aware of beverage service and food service when timing your bathroom visits.
- Whatever time zone you are traveling to, sync up to it on the way over so you can adjust quicker.
- Stay Healthy when Flying
Ensure your immune system is in peak condition before traveling by eating plenty of fruit and vegetables prior to your trip. If you feel you need extra help, then stock up on vitamins and supplements to boost your intake.
- Advance Attention to Safety
When boarding the aircraft, make a mental note of all exits, and count how many seat rows you pass from the exit to your row. This will expedite your escape route in case of an emergency landing if there is smoke and/or power loss in the cabin. And by all means, pay attention to the flight crew.
No matter how boring or uninteresting it may sound, their instructions are vital ... and read the aircraft emergency procedure manual completely before takeoff. These are located in the pouch right in front of you. Do this - it pays to be prepared for flight. Knowledge is power, and armed with the basics you can sit back and enjoy your flight.
- Air Pressure Solutions
Bring gum along with you. When you are taking off, chew it. Another way to help with air pressure is to blow with your hand over your nose and mouth. Plus one more - swallow and yawn.
- Air Sickness
If you get motion sick easily, you may be more comfortable if you take some sort of motion sickness drug before you fly. Note that you must take the drugs before you get sick.
Motion sickness is caused in part by a discrepancy between what the eye sees and what the inner ear feels. It may help to close your eyes the moment you start to consider thinking about getting airsick.
If you do come down with discomfort, one relatively easy but embarrassing way to feel better is to empty your stomach. 'Barf bags' are usually located in the pouch on the back of the seat in front of you. Frequently, using them reduces and/or eliminates the discomfort.
- Airplane Temperature
Because of the altitude, airplanes can be quite cold (especially the floor). Try to take a jacket with on board and take one of the blankets that the airline provides. Wool socks are not a bad idea either. On the larger planes, there is usually a little fan that blows on you. The airflow can be adjusted by twisting the unit.
Travelling Overseas
- Bottled Water Can Keep You Healthy
When travelling to countries where the local water is unsafe to drink, always be sure to purchase bottled water (and check the seals!) When you are finished drinking from the bottle, poke a hole in the bottom so that they cannot be refilled and sold as new.
- Are Your Immunizations Up-to-Date?
Be sure to consult travel medicine experts before engaging in international travel! Immunizations and prescriptions for preventative medications can help to ensure a healthy trip.
- Do You Have the Insurance You Really Need?
Travel Insurance? Do you have yours? Many people assume their travel insurance covers them while they are outside of their home country. But they do not realize that they need new or additional coverage to protect them against things like medical evacuations, sudden and unexpected emergencies, terrorism, etc. Be proactive and research your insurance needs before you travel outside of your home country. All travel agents have a comprehensive coverage plan that you can take on.
